NAT Rules That Grow Until Nobody Understands Them

NAT almost never starts as a problem. It usually begins as one of the cleanest and most understandable parts of a firewall configuration.

Then it grows.

Not explosively — but quietly, incrementally, and “justifiably”.


The Everyday Situation

Initially

  • Simple dynamic PAT for outbound access
  • One or two inside servers
  • Traffic flows you can explain on a whiteboard

Over Time

  • Static NAT for published services
  • Additional PAT rules for new segments
  • Identity NAT for VPN traffic
  • NAT exemptions for overlapping networks

Each change makes sense in isolation.

But eventually, troubleshooting becomes guesswork. Packets disappear, flows behave inconsistently, and “nothing changed” becomes the most common lie in the room.


What’s Really Happening (Networking + Theory)

This isn’t a NAT-specific failure. It’s a classic case of rule interaction complexity.

  • Each new rule solves one edge case
  • But interacts with every existing rule
  • Global behavior becomes non-intuitive
Like an overfit model:
It works perfectly for known traffic — and fails unpredictably for new flows.

Modern firewalls amplify this effect through abstraction and precedence rules.


How NAT Is Actually Evaluated

Most engineers imagine NAT as a simple, top-to-bottom list. That mental model is wrong.

Modern firewalls first classify NAT rules into evaluation groups, and only then decide which rule applies.

Think of NAT evaluation as a funnel:

  • The packet is checked against groups of rules, not the whole list
  • Some rule groups are always checked before others
  • Within a group, the first matching rule wins

On platforms like Cisco ASA (post-8.3 / post-9.7), these groups look like this:

1. Early-Match NAT (Policy-Driven)

  • Explicit, manually ordered NAT rules
  • Used for policy NAT, NAT exemption, identity NAT
  • Evaluated first

2. Object-Based NAT

  • NAT defined directly inside network objects
  • Static NAT and dynamic PAT
  • Evaluated after early-match rules

3. Late-Match NAT

  • Manual NAT evaluated last
  • Catch-all or cleanup rules
A rule that appears “later” in the configuration may still be evaluated earlier, simply because it belongs to a higher-priority group.

A Small Failure Story

A new VPN was added. An identity NAT was introduced to avoid translation.

Days later, an unrelated outbound service broke. The identity NAT had a broader match than intended and intercepted traffic that previously hit PAT.

Nothing was syntactically wrong. The interaction was.


NAT Smells That Should Trigger a Redesign

  • Overlapping identity NATs
  • Repeated reuse of the same source objects
  • Temporary rules left behind
  • Fear of deleting anything

Treat NAT Like a Diagram, Not a List

Text configurations hide behavior. Diagrams expose it.

Systems fail when complexity grows without structure.
